Gold Coast Hinterland Bushwalking

Gold Coast Hinterland Bushwalking

Gold Coast Hinterland Bushwalking Adventures

Gold Coast Hinterland also known partly as The Scenic Rim is well named for its spectacular landscapes and rich profusion of National Parks. Much of this amazing area is internationally recognised for its unique rural values as part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Tourism Australia has also recognised the area for its significance through its National Landscapes initiative. The Scenic Rim is part of the broader area called the Green Cauldron. This is a reference to its verdant nature and origin as a volcanic area over 22 million years ago.

Lamington National Park and Springbrook National Park form part of the original caldera of the Tweed Volcano with its famous peak (volcanic plug) called Mt Warning.

Our unique location at Wallaby Ridge Retreat means you have opportunities to visit all these places from a central base. We always have a good supply of sunscreen, rain ponchos and bug repellent for our bushwalking adventurers to help make your stay that bit more comfortable. Return to our self-catering accommodation, enjoy a swim or relax in the spa, let us cook an evening meal (prior arrangement please) and make your holiday an amazing bushwalking adventure in the Gold Coast Hinterland and Scenic Rim.  Gold Coast Hinterland : Things to see and do in the Scenic Rim

These Scenic Rim landscapes from Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook, Binna Burra, all the way out to Mt Barney and Main Range National Park, offer many opportunities for walks, picnics, challenging hiking, impressive lookouts and waterfalls and wondrous cliff lined escarpments. Many carefully constructed and well defined walking trails lead through these volcanic landscapes. They provide a unique opportunity to discover amazing plant and wildlife and enjoy amazing outlooks and vistas.

Gold Coast Hinterland and Scenic Rim, the story of pristine rainforest

The vegetation of Gold Coast Hinterland and Scenic Rim is a unique mix of subtropical and Gondwana rainforest which thrives on the volcanic soils. The various microclimates created by the terrain, soil and weather have afforded an amazing diversity of plant and animal species, totally unique to this area. The Alberts Lyrebird is a prime example.

As a bushwalking visitor, the National Parks have graded their tracks so visitors can plan a visit comfortably and safely. Lamington NP and Springbrook both offer well rounded facilities from manned park offices through to wheelchair accessibility.

The area also has some “must see” features, including the Glow worm caves at Natural Bridge, Numinbah Valley. This natural arch geological feature is a water formed cavern with a colony of tiny glow worms.

Best of All Lookout at Springbrook is one of my favourites with spectacular views on a clear day. The Antarctic Beech, some of the oldest tree species grow dense and thick with moss from the damp environment throughout Springbrook, Binna Burra and Lamington National Parks. They are part of the original and ancient species of the era termed Gondwana.

Birding in Australia: the Gold Coast Hinterland and Scenic Rim

Avid birdwatchers enjoy twitching opportunities and discovering the Alberts Lyrebird, the Regents Bowerbird and other amazing and totally unique birdlife. Local rangers can give you tips on which track affords the best opportunities.

Experience nature in the Scenic Rim

Watch the blue clawed crayfish leverage themselves upstream in the rainforest creekbeds on their enormous claw, their vibrant blue reminiscent of a china plate.

Much of the mammalian life is nocturnal: possums, sugar gliders, quolls, but look out for sleepy Koalas in open Eucalypt forest and Wallabies, pademelons and bandicoots at dusk.

 Waterfalls in the Scenic Rim

Waterfalls are always popular with vistors: MinyonFalls at Lamington NP (O’Reillys section), Purlingbrook Falls at Springbrook, and Cedar Creek Falls at Tamborine are a few of my favourites. Curtis Falls at Tamborine Mountain is an easily accessible and popular waterfall.
